History of The Colorado Springs Country Club...

The Colorado Springs Country Club was chartered in June of 1954 as a non-profit, private Club.  The Club’s founders had in mind a family Club to serve the social and recreational needs of the members.

Initially, the Club was located on land leased from Dr. Houck, which was once the McKnight Dairy Farm.  The old dairy barn remains as part of the Clubhouse.  The main floor serves as the foyer and three private party rooms, while the loft houses the administrative offices.

The original charter began with a 99-year lease of the properties now in use.  The co-founders and owners of the two parcels of land were Dr. Houck and Mr. Young.  Dr. Houck owned 87.57 acres, on which all facilities are located except holes 12 through 16.  The 34 acres used for holes 12 through 16 were leased from the other co-founder, Mr. Young.

From 1954 until 1965, the course was only nine holes.  In 1963, the firm of Harrison, Brauer & Rippel (Golf Course Architects) was hired to draw up plans for an additional nine holes.  The eighteen-hole course was completed in 1965.  The course remained unchanged until 1983 when subtle changes to most of the holes were made.  In 1987, two new greens were built along with a new Pro Shop, new Tennis facilities and other modifications.  The results of this improvement are evident throughout the Club.

In the fall of 1995, the Club began an extensive renovation and improvement program.  It started with the purchase of the Houck property and facilities making up the Club area.  A state-of-the-art irrigation system was installed on the golf course, we completely redecorated the Clubhouse with a new entrance, and finished with substantial improvements to the Swimming and Tennis areas.

In 2000 another improvement program was voted on and approved to renovate the heating, venting and building systems in and around the Kitchen.  This included a surprise asbestos removal that took the two-week schedule to six weeks.  Other items in this project included the patio awning and some minor utility work in the bathhouse.

After a lengthy discussion, debate and a vote, a project to build a new lake as well as to lower and re-build the green on number twelve was approved in January of 2003.  Designed by Kevin Atkinson of the Dick Phelps Golf Course Architecture firm the hole has received praises from the members and guests.  Modeled to benefit the Clubs achievement of a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the project was a success.  In addition to the benefits on number twelve, enhancements were made to holes thirteen and sixteen during this improvement.

A very successful renovation of the Clubhouse was recently completed.  The Club has also recently renovated the bathhouse, built a new restroom facility on the golf course, and made improvements to the main irrigation line from our wells.

The members are Club’s greatest assets and are very proud of their Club, the Board of Directors and the staff continue to focus on improvements and appreciate the member’s support and participation.
